Abstract The application of a three-dimensional directional drilling computer program, named DIDRIL*, is discussed. It is used to analyze building, dropping, and holding assemblies in straight, 2-D curved, and 3-D curved (spiral) boreholes. The effects of WOB, TOB, and borehole curvature on the build/drop and walk trends of the assemblies are studied. The results show that the curvature of the borehole has strong influence on the build/drop and walk tendencies of BHAs, whereas the TOB has little effect.
