The concept of an elastic strain corresponding with the state of stress produced in thin-film structures containing one-dimensional composition modulation is considered as an explanation for the increased elastic moduli observed experimentally. The extent of modulus enhancement is predicted successfully using a pseudopotential energy calculation approach.
