Abstract

Review of Literature Since the above-mentioned publication, Beaudry has published the following chromosome numbers: 272 = 36 in S. nlbopilosn Braun (1959); 272 = 18 in S. . rzcgosn forma villosn (Pursh) Beaudry, 272 7 36 in S. nspern Ait., 272 = 18 in S. celtidifolia Small, and 272 = 54 in S. nestivalis Bicltnell (1960). In addition, Raven, Solbrig, Kyhos and Snow (1960) have reported on the gainetic chromosome numbers of individuals of six taxa of Solidngo as follows: S. cnliforaicn Nutt., 9; S. snlebrosn (Piper) Rydb. ( S . cn~tndensis aff. var. snlebrosn (Piper) Jones), 27; S. gzcirndonis Gray, V ; S. occidentnlis (Nutt.) T. & G., 9; S. sparsiflor Gray, 9; and S. spnthulntn DC., 9. Moreover, Turner and Ellison (1960) have found a gametic number of 9 in S. ~zitidn T. & G.; Sorsa (1962) has determined a gametic number of 9 and a somatic number of 18 in Finnish specimens of S. Virgnuren L.; Huziwara (1962) has found somatic numbers of 18 in S. Virgunren ssp. asisintica Kitamura, S. Virgnzcl-en ssp. gignnten Kitamura, S. Virgnzcren ssp. leiocnrpn Hulten, and S. Yokusnin~tn Maltino, of 36 in S. gignfzten var, serotina (Ait.) Cronq. ( S . sel-oti7za Ait.), and of 54 in S. nltissi~gzn L.; and finally, Turner, Powell and King (1962) have determined a n number of 9 in mex xi can specimens of S. velz~ti7zzn DC, and of S. Wrightii Gray.
