Abstract Six tricyclohexyltin triorganogermyl (substituted) propionates have been synthesized and their structures characterized by IR, multinuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H, 13 C, 119 Sn) and Mössbauer spectroscopies. Three of them have been characterized crystallographically by X‐ray diffraction. The crystal structures of [( p ‐CH 3 C 6 H 4 ) 3 GeCH( p ‐CH 3 C 6 H 4 )CH 2 COOSn(C 6 H 11 ) 3 ] ( 1 ) and [(C 6 H 5 ) 3 GeCH(C 6 H 5 )CH(CH 3 )COOSn(C 6 H 11 ) 3 ] ( 3 ) indicate that the tin possesses a tetrahedral geometry. The crystal structure of [( p ‐CH 3 C 6 H 4 ) 3 GeCH( p ‐CH 3 OC 6 H 4 )CH 2 COOSn(C 6 H 11 ) 3 ]H 2 O ( 2 ) shows trigonal bipyramidal geometry around the tin with water of hydration enhancing the coordination sphere of the metal. Some of these compounds demonstrated positive antibacterial, antifungal and lethality bioassays. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
