The fundamental processes occurring in the interaction of organic molecules with Bronsted and/or Lewis acids in the gas phase are discussed and the fragmentation of the principal classes of organic compounds initiated by chemical ionisation is examined. It is shown that the unique advantages of mass-spectrometry with chemical ionisation are manifested most strikingly in structural studies of complex natural and synthetic products with labile bonds. The bibliography includes 108 references.
