Examination of the unit cell dimensions of y Mn-Cu alloys indicates that the martensitic transformation which occurs in manganese-rich alloys is accompanied by a decrease in volume. The incorporation of this decrease into the existing description of the transformation.in place of the increase suggested previously, produces a better fit between theory and experiment as shown by neutron diffraction data. The result is relevant to the study of the metastability of y Mn alloys, and to current measurements on y Mn-Ni alloys.
