Abstract

Abstract Optical rotatory dispersion measurements on metachromatic heparin:dye complexes have revealed Cotton effects in the absorption region of the hound dye which are dependent upon the “native” integrity of the heparin molecule and upon the dye to site ratio, that is, the dye array. According to the recent ideas concerning induced Cotton effects in external chromophores hound to helical polymers, heparin, a mucopolysaccharide, appears to exhibit helical secondary structure.
