Abstract

An account is given of the growing of single crystals of lithium iodide for use as scintillation detectors of slow and resonance energy neutrons. Tin, europium and samarium activators have been tested and their relative merits are presented. Where possible the phosphor properties are compared with a standard sodium iodide crystal. The practical application of lithium iodide crystals to neutron counting and the limitations imposed by their sensitivity to γ-radiation are discussed.
