Ion distribution and long-range order in concentrated electrolyte solutions

Abstract

The techniques of neutron diffraction have been combined with the method of isotopic enrichment to obtain, for the first time, an ion-ion partial structure factor in an aqueous solution. The data provide clear evidence that in the solution studied-NiCl2 in D2O-the Ni ions are arranged on a quasi-lattice and possess a substantial degree of long-range order.
