The band absorption coefficient of some of the molecules abundant in the solar photosphere has been compared with the total absorption coefficient of metals and hydrogen. It is found that the band absorptions considered are possibly large enough to account for the missing opacity in the solar ultraviolet spectrum, except in a small interval between 2500 and 3000 A.
