Rigid and rodlike, helical polyacetylene molecules self-assemble hierarchically on graphite upon exposure to solvent vapors. Flat polyacetylene monolayers form epitaxially on the basal plane of the graphite, on which helical polyacetylene molecules further self-assemble into chiral 2D bundles of helices with controlled helicity (see picture).
