Abstract Contrary to earlier reports the reaction of sodium trimethylsilanolate with stannous chloride does not yield bis(trimethylsiloxy)tin(II) (1) but a polynuclear compound of the type Sn 2 O(OSiMe 3 ) 2 (2). 1 is obtained from the reaction of stannocene with trimethylsilanole. The compound is a dimer that gives rapid exchange reactions of terminal and bridging trimethylsiloxy groups in inert organic solvents.
