The study of growth and development made by the Department of Child Hygiene at the Harvard School of Public Health2 includes data on the eruption and the carious condition of the deciduous teeth which deserve preliminary statistical analysis. The babies studied were born to mothers who had attended the out-patient department of a maternity hospital for prenatal care. They are considered to be a representative sample of a middle class population. The families are for the most part of Northern European stock. A detailed description of the group is given in another publication (8, p. 20). The children were examined at birth, at three months' intervals up to one year, and at six months' intervals thereafter. There have been few changes in the personnel examining the children.
