Successful Liver Transplantation from a Living Donor to Her Son

In July 1989, an Australian surgical team successfully performed an\northotopic reduced-size liver transplantation in a 17-month-old infant, using\na portion of his mother's liver. The authors describe, with illustrations,\nthe operative procedure in the donor, the preparation of the graft, and the\noperative procedure in the recipient. They discuss the implications of this\ncase and others for liver transplantation in children, for whom treatment of\nend-stage liver disease is hampered by a shortage of cadaveric organs, and\naddress the ethical issues involved in living related donor transplantation. \n(KIE abstract)
