Band calculations appear to support the view that the rapid decrease in the Neel temperature of chromium with application of pressure is due to a decrease in the area of fit of parts of the Fermi surface after relative displacement by the spin density wavevector (SDW) q. However it seems necessary for each domain to be elastically anisotropic in the direction of polarization which may also explain the inhibition of the formation of certain SDW on cooling chromium through the Neel temperature under uniaxial stress.
