Lesbian Behavior as an Adaptation to the Occupation of Stripping

Abstract

Simon and Gagnon have drawn attention to the importance of linking patterns of homosexual behavior to nondeviant behavior or roles. A complementary perspective is suggested wherein the choice of sexual object is influenced by structural factors, as appears to be the case in the total institutional setting. Some occupations may provide conditions to which homosexual behavior emerges as an adaptation. Stripping appears to be such an occupation in which the following conditions exist: 1) isolation from affective social relationships, 2) unsatisfactory relationships with males, and 3) an opportunity structure allowing a wide range of sexual behavior.
