Nuclear magnetic relaxation times T1 and T2 have been measured in various polyethylene melts to 200°C. Two distinct T2's can be resolved in all cases but single T1's have been found. T1 is never equal to T2. A self-consistent explanation is offered in terms of the theory of Kubo and Tomita as modified by (1) the assumption of a very broad distribution of motional correlation times, and (2) the assumption of a ``two-phase'' structure of the polymer melt.
