Sputum eosinophil, neutrophil, and lymphocyte counts increase during COPD exacerbations. The increase in systemic inflammation during exacerbations seems to be limited to exacerbations caused by bacterial infections of the lower airways. Sputum TNF-alpha is a candidate marker for predicting airway bacterial infection.
