Abstract The mean molar susceptibilities of some methyl derivatives of benzoic acid have been measured. From these measurements and the calculated value of the in-plane susceptibilities (K1, K2) of each molecule, the semiexperimental magnetic anisotropy of the acid molecule has been determined. The obtained magnetic data are explained on the basis of the hydrogen bonding systems of these molecules.
