Although the dominant defect is usually one of insufficient red cell production, a decreased erythrocyte life-span has been demonstrated in a number of studies (1-5); indeed, a recent report (6) suggests that a significantly shortened red cell survival is characteristic of the advanced stages of the disease. The mechanism of this increased rate of cell destruction is not known. The classical manifestations of hemolytic anemia are scant or absent. Evidences of markedly increased hemoglobin catabolism and of intense erythropoiesis are usually not...References1. BROWN GM: Pathogenesis of secondary anaemias. Canad. Med. Ass. J. 62: 472, 1950.
