Calculations are made of the magnetostriction constants λ100 and λ111 for nickel at 0°K, based on the collective electron model and the calculations of the author of the N(E) curve for the 3d electrons in that metal. The values − 187 × 10-6 and − 44 ×10-6 obtained for λ100 and λ111 respectively are both rather larger than the latest experimental figures which, however, are available only at 120°K. The method of calculation is very similar to that used by the author previous work on ferromagnetic anisotropy and the possible reasons for discrepancy between theory and experiment are also similar.
