We describe a new algorithm for the calculation of Liapunov quantities for two-dimensional systems in terms of the complex form of the system. It is more transparent conceptually and more efficient computationally. We demonstrate the advantages of this approach by deriving the integrability conditions and information about the bifurcation of limit cycles for some cubic systems.
