The well-known Görtler series for forced flow over arbitrary cylinders is here extended to laminar free convection along a heated vertical plate with arbitrary surface-temperature variations. The leading term in the series, which already satisfies the complete boundary conditions, is identical to the known similarity solutions for surface temperatures varying as a power n of the distance from the leading edge. Universal functions associated with the first five terms in the series are calculated for a Prandtl number of 0.72. A numerical example is shown for a specific surface-temperature variation, and the results are compared to that of an approximate integral solution for the same case.
