Abstract

Turkey is a country with a very complex geologic evolution, dominated mostly by the opening and closing of the Tethyan Oceans: Prototethys, Paleotethys, and Neotethys. This complexity can become obvious even when one examines a generalized geological map of Turkey Striking features of such a map include the presence of many ophiolitic rocks, at least three suture zones, and other continent‐continent collision‐related structures and basins. The tectonics of Turkey is also complicated by post‐collisional structures such as the Aegean continental extension; the North and East Anatolian strike slip fault zones; and the central Anatolian interior basins.
