The first diarylstannylene monomeric in the solid state and not stabilized by donor ligands is 1. The dark red compound forms in good yields from Sn[N(SiMe3)2]2 and RLi (R = 2,4,6-tBu3C6H2). In solution 1 apparently isomerizes to give the sterically less encumbered stannylene RR′Sn: (R′ CH2C(Me)2 −3,5-tBu2C6H3).
