A series of new zwitterionic chromophores, picolinium quinodimethane (PQDM), exhibited an exceptionally large molecular hyperpolarizability (e.g., βzzz = 1930 × 10-30 esu). A guest−host polymer showed a high elecrooptic coefficient of 21 pm/V at 1550 nm and a good temporal stability over 700 h.
