An Earth Fissure in Southern Arizona

Abstract

A recently formed fissure in basin-fill material is described. Several possible modes of origin are discussed and the conclusion is reached that the rupture was probably the result of vibrations from a distant earthquake, aided, perhaps, by tensional strain in the superficial deposit.
