Abstract The distribution of alkali metal picrates between water and benzene was investigated in the presence of 18-crown-6. The overall equilibrium constants, Kex, and some constituent equilibrium constants were determined. The Kex value increases, passes through a maximum (at potassium), and falls off as the size of the alkali metal cation increases.
