Abstract

Thoracic epidural anesthesia blunts the decrease of subcutaneous tissue oxygen tension caused by surgical stress and adrenergic vasoconstriction during major abdominal surgery. Consequently, combined general and epidural anesthesia helps to provide sufficient tissue oxygenation.
