Thrombocytopenia developed in a 69-year-old woman receiving heparin sodium therapy for deep-vein thrombosis. Bone marrow and platelet survival studies suggested peripheral destruction of platelets. The serum factor associated with thrombocytopenia was shown to be an IgM immunoglobulin. Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia may be a common side effect of heparin therapy and should be evaluated to avoid serious consequences. (<i>JAMA</i>240:2560-2562, 1978)
