Abstract

The bovine pituitary organ and median eminence contain large amounts of serotonin, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), and monoamine oxidase. Highest serotonin concentrations are found in the infundibular process (i.e., the neural lobe), the infundibular stem, and the pars intermedia. 5-HIAA levels and monoamine oxidase activity are greatest in the infundibular process.
