The c/a ratios of the hexagonal AlN and BeO structures show that they do not have a regularly tetrahedral distribution of bonds. The structural details have been studied by x-ray analysis and are discussed in relation to the concepts of the electronegativity and electroneutrality of atoms. This gives a basis for an understanding of the distribution of the wurtzite and zinc blende lattices in the binary compounds of the group III/V and II/VI elements.
