Compared 2 models of family functioning: the Beavers Systems Model (W. R. Beavers and M. N. Voeller; see record 1983-33204-001) and the Circumplex Model (CM) of D. H. Olson et al (1983). The Self-Report Family Inventory (SFI) was used for the Beavers model, and Forms II and III of the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES) were used for the CM. 746 members of 192 families, 259 undergraduate students, and 192 single college-age raters participated. When compared on family health, significant between-group differences were found in scores on the FACES II and III. A high level of association existed between FACES II and III Cohesion items and SFI Health. Adaptability scores, particularly on FACES II, related significantly to health scores. Discrepancies were found between the structure of the data and the structure of the CM.
