Abstract Polystyrene was fractionated and refractionated to obtain essentially homogeneous fractions. The constants K and a in the conventional equation [η] = KM a were determined. The intrinsic viscosity in an ideal solvent fitted the relation [η]θ = KM 1/2 over the molecular weight range 0.04 × 10 6 to 1.46 × 10 6 . The degree of flexibility of polystyrene chains in solution is compared with those of polymethyl and polyethyl methacrylates.
