Abstract

The use of tracheostomies is becoming increasingly common in intensive care and on wards. This article examines the indications for tracheostomy and the evidence base for the tracheostomy weaning regimens that are used today. The systematic, multidisciplinary approach to tracheostomy management which has been implemented at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery is described and the results of an audit of this approach are discussed. It is argued that a multidisciplinary, systematic approach to tracheosotomy care, provided by a dedicated team, can result in fewer complications during weaning.
