In a prospective controlled clinical trial of prophylactic oral kanamycin and oral metronidazole in 71 patients undergoing elective colonic surgery, significant reduction in coliform and bacteroides faecal flora was achieved, and this was reflected in a significantly reduced incidence of wound infection. No toxic effects were observed during this trial.
