The complete set of figures which Chladni produced on circular plates has been examined. It has been found that a second subsidiary normal vibrating mode, the nodal system of which consists of diameters, is in many of the figures compounded with a principal figure of nearly identical period. The manner of support and the manner of excitation make such combinations likely.
