Abstract

The effects of administration of ACTH and the major ovine adrenal steroids on renal function in conscious sheep were examined. Glomerular filtration rate and effective renal plasma flow increased with ACTH to 159 and 168% of control and with combined steroid infusion to 153 and 173%, respectively. Filtration fraction fell, absolute tubular sodium reabsorption was increased and glomerulo-tubular balance preserved. The similarity of changes in renal function suggests that these changes are not responsible for the greater blood pressure rise observed with ACTH treatment.
