Polarisation-insensitive 980/1550 nm wavelength(de)multiplexer using MMI couplers

Abstract

A polarisation-insensitive planar 980/1550 nm wavelength (de)multiplexing coupler based on multimode interference (MMI) effects is presented. The device is useful for integration with rare-earth doped waveguide amplifiers and lasers. The waveguide parameters and, in particular, the coupler width are chosen to optimise the device performance and obtain polarisation-insensitivity.
