Abstract The potential use of sodium anthraquinone 2‐sulphonate (ASANA) as a general‐purpose shift reagent for cyclodextrins is reported. It is demonstrated that completely resolved proton NMR spectra are obtained on inclusion of the host in the cavity of β‐and y‐cyclodextrins. The inclusion complexes have been characterized in terms of stoichiometry and association constants.
