The initial 12-month followup showed no significant differences in recurrence or complication rates between the stapled and unstapled groups. Both groups returned to work within an average of 4 days. A net savings of $120 was realized for each hernia repair performed without stapled mesh. In addition, stapling presents an inherent risk of nerve damage.
