Abstract A segmented polyurethane elastomer, originally developed for elastic thread, is now being used for molded prostheses. Chemical, mechanical, and biological properties are described. Hydrolytic stability of this polymer is compared to that of a polyester urethan. Experience with the material used in components of an experimental heart‐assist pump has shown excellent flex endurance, wear resistance, and intravascular acceptability.
