The bacteriology of infections of the female genital tract in 91 hospitalized patients was investigated. Anaerobic bacteria were the predominant organisms isolated in 75% of cases. Multiple anaerobic species were present in 47% and anaerobes only were isolated in 37%. The most commonly found anaerobes were organisms of the bacteroides species. The most frequently isolated facultative bacteria were the gram-negative enteric bacilli and streptococcus species.
