The effect of composition, microstructure, and preferred orientation upon the oxidation of iron‐nickel‐cobalt alloy was investigated. Decarburized samples were oxidized at various temperatures and times. Decarburization at 1100°C in wet hydrogen enhances the (200) orientation. The oxidation rate depends on the alloy grain size and minor alloy constituents and is enhanced at the grain boundaries. The oxide is predominantly spinel with increased amounts of appearing in fine‐grain alloy oxidized at lower temperatures and longer times.
