The two-dimensional problem of a rigid cylinder sliding on an elastic half-space containing a surface-breaking crack is solved using complex-variable techniques. The problem is reduced to a singular-integral equation which is solved numerically. Results are obtained for comparison with previous contact fatigue calculations, which were based on prescribed Hertzian contact stresses as opposed to the prescribed displacements as used in this paper. It is demonstrated that for engineering applications, prescribing stresses and ignoring interaction effects is a good approximation for the geometries under consideration.
