Using incoherent inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy the triply degenerate stretching mode of the hydrogen ion in [HCo6(CO)15]– has been assigned at 1056 cm–1. This is the first assignment of this mode for a hexanuclear metal complex in which the hydrogen atom has been shown (by neutron diffraction) to lie at the centre of an octahedral hole. The first overtone has also been observed at 2130 cm–1.
