The movement, reactions, and adsorption of S by plants occur predominately as sulfate. Although SO/sub 4//sup 2 -/ may account for less than 10 per cent of the total S in surface soils, the amounts in subsoils may represent a significant portion of the total. Details of the phenomena are of importance to soil scientists and the behavior of sulfate has received considerable attention in recent years. The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on the status of knowledge and present examples of the main processes involved in soil systems.
