Autosensitization in Pemphigus and Bullous Pemphigoid

Abstract

Recent recognition of the diagnostic value of immunofluorescence in pemphigus and bullous pemphigoid has resulted in an influx of individuals and laboratories using these techniques. The techniques of immunofluorescence are, in themselves, quite straightforward, but, unfortunately, preparation of proper conjugates is difficult and not uniformly defined and, equally difficult, interpretation of stained slides is very subjective and requires considerable experience. Because this book by Beutner, Chorzelski, and Jordon clearly defines these problems, its present availability comes at a very opportune time. Methods are detailed in the text and in an extensive appendix. The theme which runs throughout these portions of the book is the necessity for the full and precise definition of substrates, conjugates, and interpretive criteria in all reported studies involving immunofluorescence. However, for those individuals not interested in specific methodology there are several chapters considering the significance of antibodies in pemphigus and bullous pemphigoid to the possible pathogenesis
