Metallic Palladium in the Heck Reaction: Active Catalyst or Convenient Precursor?

Novel experimental evidence is presented pointing out that “heterogeneous” palladium metal catalysts employed in Heck-type reactions mainly act as sources of soluble palladium(II) complexes, which are the true catalytically active species.
