Concepedia

TLDR

The book compiles symposium papers on nasal mucosa toxicity, drawing on animal studies of rats, guinea pigs, and monkeys to examine anatomy, physiology, and responses to airborne chemicals, irritants, and vapors. It details the toxic mechanisms of formaldehyde, xenobiotics, and genotoxic agents in rat nasal epithelium. The volume is deemed valuable for researchers studying olfaction and nasal airway disorders in animals.

Abstract

This book is a compilation of papers presented at a symposium by the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology, which was held in Raleigh, NC, Feb 22, 1984. It is based on experimental observations, primarily in animals, such as the rat, guinea pig, and monkey. There is a free exchange of ideas regarding the basic science of chemicals as relates to their exposure to the nasal mucosa in these animals. In general, the discussions concern the anatomy, physiology, and normal and abnormal reactions of the mucosa to various pollutants, including airborne chemicals, irritants, and chemical vapors to both the respiratory and olfactory membranes. The book also discusses the mechanisms of toxicity as induced by formaldehyde, xenotiotics, and genotoxic affects in the rat epithelium. I think this book has importance from two points of view. The first would be for the researcher involved in olfaction and nasal airway problems in the animal.
